Trauma-informed yoga is based on the understanding that trauma impacts the entire mind-body system. “Trauma,” Bessel van der Kolk explains, “is not just an event that took place sometime in the past; it is also the imprint left by that experience on mind, brain, and body.”
Trauma-sensitive yoga is a form of yoga “designed to directly address symptoms associated with traumatic exposure” by creating a safe environment using modified yogic techniques that include reduction or elimination of corrective touch, a focus on client choice and language inviting the clients to try rather than to accomplish.
This yoga class is about freedom, fearlessness, tranquility and peace. The practice will bring forth renewed strength, creativity, flexibility and clarity. Introducing different postures, breathing, concentration and integration you will be lead on a journey of creativity and healing.
Mindfulness meditation is an integral part of your yoga practice. The meditation will bring stillness of mind and cultivate deeper focus. For those students new to meditation, this class will enhance your concentration and will help you liberate your mind from distracting and disturbing thoughts, emotions, and desires. For already practicing meditation students, you will experience a stimulating and supportive environment to enhance your practice and growth.

Yoga Therapy can help you get out of pain.
It is a practice that will help you move better by improving the function of your joints and muscles. You will learn how to relax the muscles that are contributing to your tension and pain and nurture and strengthen your supporting muscles (and your awareness).
As you start to move better your energy will improve. You will feel more relaxed and balanced in whatever activities you enjoy doing.
Yoga Therapy movements tend to be really small to start and gradually increase as we work towards your goals, whether that is playing with your grandchildren, climbing a 5.12, or mastering a forearm stand!

Pranayama is one of the key practices within the Yoga discipline. Pranayama is a Sanskrit word
generally meaning “control of the breath”.
Pranayama is the practice of giving pure, unwavering awareness to your breath- allowing one to
reconnect to their source of vitality. Pranayama is the Hatha Yoga practice of developing one’s
breath potential beyond an involuntary state to create various experiences within the body.
Some breath work relaxes you, some balances your energy, some cleanse and detoxify, some cool, some prepare your body specifically to start meditation; you will learn 5 breaths to achieve all these states in this workshop!
The breathing techniques we will explore in depth in this course are:
– UJJAYI pranayama (the victorious breath)
– NADI SHODHANA pranayama (alternate nostril breathing)
– KAPALABHATI pranayama (skull-shining breath)
– SITALI pranayama (the cooling breath)
– BHRAMARI pranayama (the humming bee breath)
In addition to guidance and direct experience working with each breathing technique, we will
explore the anatomy and physiology of breathwork specifically in relation to the Bandhas
“energy locks”. This workshop will provide you with tools to incorporate in your Yoga practice
as well as your day-to-day life.
“When the breath wanders, the mind is unsteady, but when the breath is still, so is the mind
still.” – Hatha Yoga Pradipika

The Sleep Workshop
For those who want to sleep better, so you can feel your best while awake.
We spend a lot of time working on the things we do while awake, like exercise and diet, but we don’t typically spend a whole lot of time on what we do for 1/3 of our lives: SLEEP. However, when sleep becomes elusive, it impacts everything we do and occupies a lot of our thoughts. A good night’s sleep can make us feel good. The symptoms of many medical conditions can even be reduced with good sleep, including chronic pain, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, arthritis and many more….
In this workshop you will learn how you can improve your sleep using science, Ayurveda*, yoga and sleep meditation (yoga nidra). (*In this ancient Indian health care practice sleep is one of the 3 pillars of health)
This workshop is for you if:
•you often feel tired, or experience brain fog during the day
•you have trouble falling or staying asleep
•you press snooze a lot or have trouble getting out of bed in the morning
•you feel like your sleep could be better
•you’re interested in learning about sleep
•You are willing to dedicate some time to sleep practices
So what would be possible if you:
•could fall asleep easily
•slept soundly and deeply
•were able to fall back asleep if you woke
•awoke in the morning feeling refreshed – without an alarm clock
Getting a good nights sleep improves:
•mental focus and concentration
•memory
•creativity
•mood
•immune system
•hormone balance and regulation
What we cover in this workshop:
•the science of sleep and why it is so important
•an Ayurvedic perspective on Sleep
•Tips and tools to improve your sleep
•a bedtime yoga practice
•sleep meditation practice
You will receive 2 recordings to practice at home:
•15 min get ready for bed yoga practice
•20 min Sleep meditation practice
Investment:
$87 for the 2.5hr workshop ($75 for ARC members), 2 recordings and the opportunity to sleep better (priceless)
“The cost of being awake is essentially low brain damage, sleep is the natural remedy to clean up and repair our brain and the rest of our body” – Matthew Walker

Join us as we partner with Matthieu Bonin (msmanitoulinswim.com) in support of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.
We’ll gather for a talk by Matthieu, followed by a 60-minute flow yoga class from 11:30-12:30 led by Sandra Comeau.
Stick around afterwards to chat with Matthieu, sip some tea and enjoy some delicious treats generously donated by Beards Bakery.
This event is by donation, with all proceeds going to the MS Society of Canada. We hope to see you there!!
About Matthieu
In July 2022, Matthieu Bonin stage swam 150km, half-way around Manitoulin, the world’s largest fresh water island. In doing so, he became the first person to swim the entire Northern side of the island, braving the cold, turbulent and dangerous waters of Lake Huron.
His self described life purpose is to be a light for dark places. He witnessed firsthand the darkness Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can wreak on an individual and their loved ones. His aunt Claire Poirier passed away from this illness in 2019, which is why he dedicated this swimming expedition in her memory and fundraised $26,000 for the MS Society of Canada.
Surprisingly, Matthieu had only been swimming for a year and half before attempting this expedition. A broken foot led Matthieu to swimming, as this was his only way of keeping active. In November 2020, he struggled to swim a single pool length. Only 9 months after beginning to swim, he swam across the largest lake in the world contained in city limits, Wanapitei. This swim was in the loving memory of Evvy Cacciotti and raised $12,500 for the NEO Kids Foundation.
That same summer of 2021, Matthieu swam across twenty Northern Ontario lakes to raise money for Camp Quality, a summer camp for kids affected by cancer. He strives to achieve seemingly impossible goals, to show that if you believe it, you can achieve it. He hopes to inspire you to achieve your own ambitious goals so that you may better yourself and your community.

Restorative Aerial Yoga is a deeply healing, low to the ground, suspension practice in an aerial hammock. The intention is to restore and relax your nervous system, release and massage sore, tight muscles with a big emphasis on decompressing the spine and lower back. Truthfully, it feels more like a spa treatment! The weightless feeling is comparable to floating in the water. The feeling of calm comes easily, preparing the body for a deep sleep.
People of all age groups will benefit and enjoy restorative aerial yoga, even those who struggle with physical limitations, experience restrictions or are recovering from an injury.
In this workshop we find space and opening without pushing while creating a connection with our bodies through awareness.
At the end of your restorative aerial yoga workshop you can expect to feel a lengthening through the spine as well as a feeling of lightness and removal of any stress. Floating shavasana can be a new, invigorating experience; a lovely way to end a day.

Join Amrita for an hour and a half of deep rest and rejuvenation.
Unwind stress and tension from your mind and body through gentle, long held, fully supported yoga postures. Restorative Yoga “restores” the functionalility of the body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which, in turn helps the body rest, heal and find balance. This powerful practice has been shown to combat chronic stress, enhance immune function, improve overall mental focus, aid in bringing balance to body and mind, and it just feels great.
Many of us tend to spend our days in ‘fight or flight mode’ – the nervous system is active and ready for anything. This keeps us alert and moving but it also slows down any system in the body not used for fighting or fleeing – digestion, elimination, repair, growth, reproduction… This constant activation of our sympathetic nervous system eventually drains us as our nutrition, sleep cycle and overall quality of life is disturbed.
In Restorative Yoga we use gentle poses, breath work and props to find ourselves in a state of deep relaxation where we can begin the process of healing from chronic stress and tension. Gentle poses will be introduced to open the body, enhance spine health, massage internal organs and improve circulation. In stillness we can shift activity from our sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to our parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest) and give our bodies space to heal.
The practice will close with an even deeper tranquility from yoga nidra, a guided meditation that shifts consciousness through the body to cultivate relaxation and allow the mind and body to melt into a soothing state of being

Embark on a 12-week journey of yoga and meditation! Learn the names and safe formations of your yoga asanas (postures), three types of meditation and pranayama (breath work), as well as yoga philosophy of the yamas and niyamas. You will also learn different styles of yoga to determine which style suits you best; Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin and Kundalini. This is what the first eight weeks of your yoga journey will consist of. During the last four weeks we will put your knowledge into practice and flow through Sandra’s new program called Consciously Fit.
Consciously Fit is a mix of her programs Yoga Fit and Listen to Your Body. Listen to Your Body has you coming into restricted poses for an extended period of time with your eyes closed, this allows you to listen to where your body needs to take you. It’s a style to help you get into your body and practice true yoga, where mind and body are connected. Yoga Fit is designed to increase strength, stamina, and cardio specifically for yoga asanas (lots of core, shoulders and hips).

Functional Yoga is a blend of therapeutic and hatha yoga. Beginning with the body in mind, some movements will be really small (1 joint and 1 plane of motion) to increase your awareness of how your body moves. Movement into yoga postures will focus on your range of motion and reducing compensation patterns (which tend to occur when we move outside our stable range of motion). Breathing and relaxation are key components of this class. It is designed for people who want to move better, especially those who experience pain, tightness, tension, fatigue or want to progress in their yoga practice.
This class is great for beginners and experienced yogis seeking to deepen their understanding of their bodies and improve their range of motion.
